September 2001 Committee Minutes |
The meeting was called to order at 7:39 P.M. by Chair Dave Heutchy
Introductions were made and committee information
given for new
parents.
ATTENDANCE: Kent Brooten, Gary Bruno, Greg Cannon, Adam J. Cinkovich,
Mike Cowles, Debbie Dubay, Brian Easton, Katie Hanzeli, Mike Harris,
Dave Heutchy, Carol Malama, Rick & Susan Moloney, Pete Maricich,
Kathy
Morey, Wendy Jo Pfeiffer, Carol Pritchard, Shawn Sather, Bill Watson,
Ann Werner, Doug Wollen, and visiting, Alan Arpin.
MINUTES: The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted as written.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Reported by Carol Malama The written
report
covered two months of activity. The beginning balance as of 7/10/
2001
was $10,318.81. Income was $5,895.00, mostly from Super Outing
deposits. Expenses were $4,845.52, mostly for Summer Camp 2002.
Award
pins and other awards were also purchased. The ending balance
as of 10
September 2001 was $11,368.29. There are still a couple of Summer
Camp
2001 items outstanding. Not all of the money is troop funds.
Philmont
money is not yet disbursed. About $8,000.00 is troop money.
Troop
support for the upcoming year will change due to the large number of
new
Scouts. Mr. Heutchy explained the troop support concept.
The amount
has been reduced each year and we currently have a surplus in our bank
account. Suggestion for its use: purchase camping equipment.
There
was concern that if a Scout doesn’t own his own equipment, he will
not
care for it as carefully. Storage is also a problem. We
did buy a
climbing rope recently. Also suggested was a donation to the
St. James
Youth Mission Fund in memory of Chris Crowley. This is a committee
decision, but Mr. Heutchy requested Mr. Brooten’s ok. $45.00
has been
donated to the troop already to go to this fund.
Motion by Brian Easton: To drop the troop support this year.
Seconded
by Greg Cannon. Motion passed.
Motion by Katie Hanzeli: To donate $150.00 to the St. James
Youth
Mission Fund, $101.00 of troop money plus the $45.00 donated for the
fund. Seconded by Mike Harris. Motion passed.
SCOUTMASTER’S REPORT
Kid’s Day America: This is a health and safety affair, put on
by Hughes
Chiropractic Center, to be held on 22 September 2001. Canned
food
proceeds benefit the Auburn Food Bank. They need boys to help.
This is
good for service hours.
Wild Waves: There will be a Scout Day to be held on 29 September
2001.
Interested people should order tickets on their own from the flyer
that
was sent in the mail. Tickets are $13.00. It is the same
day as
Mayor’s Day of Concern. Mayor’s Day was explained for new people.
Woodcutting: We need to schedule some cutting days. We have orders.
50 Miler: The boys were asked to keep a journal on this hike.
The 20
mile day hike will be 12 - 14 October, give or take a day.
There is a
day off of school and it will also be a campout. The hike may
be on the
Mowich Loop or to Summerland, possibly somewhere else. Participants
can do a shorter hike. The 20 miler is necessary for the hiking
merit
badge.
Volunteer Needed: A volunteer is needed to make the red, white
and blue
ribbons for mothers’ pins. The mothers receive the ribbons when
their
son achieves the First Class rank.
Permission Slips: Slips are available on the web site.
They are
required for all outings, along with a Tour Permit. Mr. Brooten
keeps
them for one year after the event. Tour permits may be faxed
in to the
council office. Their fax number is 206-725-4330. A new
line has been
put in just for permits. See Mr. Brooten for the number.
Outing Checklist: Scouts should be using these to help them plan
their
outings. The goal is to help the Scout to do this, but not do
it for
them.
Mountaineers’ Lodge: We need a volunteer to organize
this outing.
The Mountaineers need to be contacted as soon as possible to schedule
a
date. We rent the whole lodge for a night. Money and permission
slips
also need to be collected. The Mountaineers’ Lodge is a rustic
lodge
built by the Mountaineers. It has some rope tows for skiing.
We
usually go in January or February. Greg Cannon will call.
Popcorn Sales: This is an annual fund-raiser for the council.
Our
woodcutting works for us. We are happy to buy popcorn!
Motion by Rick Moloney: That we don’t do popcorn the fund-raiser.
Seconded by Doug Wollen. Motion passed.
Adult Leadership Training: The dates this fall are Saturday, 22
September, Wednesday, 26 September, Wednesday 10 October and Friday
to
Saturday, 12 - 13 October, 2001. The program has changed so the
dates
may be inaccurate. These are the dates as printed in the “Totem”.
More
information is needed. Mr. Brooten would like all adults to take
the
Basic Adult Leadership Training and Mr. Heutchy concurred.
Boy Leaders: Mr. Brooten would like us to encourage younger Scouts
to
approach the older Scouts or unfamiliar adults for the signing of rank
requirements. This will help the new Scouts to meet other people
and
the older Scouts to learn leadership in their dealings with the younger
Scouts.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Mom & Me: Doug Wollen asked if we could participate in this
activity
again. Cheryl Bellino has been in charge in the past. Wendy
Pfeiffer
called to ask questions but got no response. Mr. Wollen would
like to
coordinate this event with a Cub Scout pack. He will get a date
on the
schedule. Suggestion: Call the Order of the Arrow people
for
information. Rick Moloney has an email contact and will check,
too.
Woodcutting: Reported by Brian Easton and Pete Maricich.
Two dates are
needed. Mr. Easton and Mr. Maricich would also like to let people
cut
in the evenings. There is still a lot of wood at St. John’s Catholic
Church in Covington. Five cords have been sold and there are
six split
cords at Mr. Brooten’s house. They would like to deliver from
each
location so the wood doesn’t have to be handled twice. Two dates
were
set: Saturday 22 September and Saturday, 6 October. On
22 September,
meet at St. John’s at 8:30 am. Their address is 25810 - 156th
Avenue S.
E., Covington. Call Mr. Easton if you wish to go cut in the evenings.
You must go in pairs.
Scoutline: Reported by Katie Hanzeli. Call Mrs. Hanzeli
if you’d like
information put on Scout Line or to check for outing return times.
Also, if there are changes in an event date, time or location, let
her
know, so that correct information is communicated on Scoutline.
Website: Please give updated information to Larry DeJong to put
on the
Website.
There were no reports for Advancement, Summer Camp, Transportation,
Uniforms, Firewood Sales, Friends of Scouting, Scouting for Food,
Chartered Organization, Round Table, Scheduling, Patrol Parents, Troop
Guide Coordinator, Youth Protection, Welcome or TLC.
OUTING REPORTS:
Sun Lakes: Reported by Doug Wollen. The trip went well.
There were
beautiful and safe shoulders for bike riding. There wasn’t enough
time
to do it all. They did explore the Lake Lenore Caves. The
Grand Coulee
Dam tour was also good. Mr. Wollen recommends a return trip next
year.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Blake Island: Reported by Mike Cowles. It is this weekend.
Sail boats
will meet at the Des Moines Marina. Power boats will meet at
the Alki
