MINUTES: The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted as written.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Reported by Carol Malama. The beginning
balance as of 12
December 2000 was $5,327.39. Income was
$2,129.37 and Expenses were $63.00.
The ending balance as of 18 January 2001
,was $7,393.76.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Summer Camp: Reported by Don
Morris. Deposits for Camp Parson’s are not
due until
March. The first deposit is $80.00. A total of $155.00 is due.
Camperships are available.
Advancement: Reported by Dave
Heutchy. The next Court of Honor is on 13
February. The Merit
Badge Clinic is coming up on 27 January and 3 March at
the LDS building next
door. We can still sign up but we may not get our first
choice of
class.
Transportation: Reported by Mike Thompson. There are 25
boys and 15 parents
signed up for the Igloo outing. Are passes
required? Park entrance is $10.00
per car or $25.00 for a Golden Eagle
passport which is good for a year. Sno
Park pass may be required
depending on the final location chosen.
Mountaineers Lodge: Reported
by Dave Heutchy. The fee is $20.00 per person,
due next weeek.
There is no family discount this year as far as we know.
Uniforms:
Reported by Katie Hanzeli. We can always use donations!
Wood
Cutting: Reported by Brian Easton. There are two cords of wood at
Eva
Hanzeli’s house in Seattle. Otherwise we are out of wood.
Keep your eyes
open! Mr. Anton has trees at his place, which must
first be dropped by
adults. 10 March is the next woodcutting date.
Wood Cutting Sales: Reported by Rosemary Gilligan. We had one
sale this last
month at the new price of $130.00 per cord.
Friends of
Scouting: Reported by Rhonda Withrow. We met our troop goal of
$3,160.00. Seventeen people have not returned their forms and notes
have been
left in their folders. Donation cards are in the front of
the folders in the
green box.
Scouting for Food: Reported by Dave
Heutchy. There are two SFF days in
March. One key is getting an
area without a lot of apartments or widespread
houses. We didn’t do
too well last year for that reason. We also are not
allowed to knock
on doors to ask for forgotten bags.
Youth Protection Coordinator:
Reported by Dave Heutchy. We need a volunteer
for this position.
Once a year, we are required to show a council video which
is geared toward
handling sexual harassment. The parents see the video first,
then it
is shown to the Scouts, with parental permission. It was last shown in
June,
after the new boys came in. It is mostly a scheduling issue.
Dave
Crowell volunteered to take this on.
Welcome: Reported by
Chris Sauanders. Mrs. Saunders is getting an
orientation ready for mid
May. She is looking to use a room at the church.
Scoutline:
Reported by Katie Hanzeli. Four people called this last month.
Roundtable: Reported by Pete Logar. We are fine until next
month.
Website: Reported by Doug Wollen. We have our own domain
name. It is
“www.BSATroop474.org”. It will cost us $15.00 per
year. The web hosting is
free. We have it for two years.
We have no response yet. We need to
transfer stuff from the old site
to it and update the information. We need to
add fresh data in a
timely manner to get people to use it. We will run it
through Geo
Cities which has the means to easily upload information. We can
update
the content as needed by various individuals. We need to get into the
habit of using it. Adding outing pictures to it would be
nice. Can we link
it to the Council site?
PLC: Reported by
Ken Wright. The meeting last Tuesday went very well. The
boys
were done by 7:15. There is not a lot of advance planning. They
dealt
with two problem kids. Cieran is getting the idea. We need
to look at three
groups: the young boys, the merit badge oriented boys and
the older boys.
Plans this time are far better than two months ago.
Scheduling: Reported by Larry DeJong. He is trying to keep
up. The new
schedule will come out about once a month.
SCOUTMASTER’S REPORT:
Igloo: There is not enough snow. 60
inches is needed at Paradise. There is
54 inches now with two to four
inches predicted for tonight. But it can melt
or rain during the
day. There is also an ice layer which prevents the blocks
from holding
together. We must be careful to protect the trees when digging
blocks. The rules have also changed. We have been given a
slightly different
spot, behind the Visitor’s Center, which is a little
father than usual and
farther than the rules allow from the
porta-potties. We have a reservation
and can tent camp. We can
build igloos if enough snow is there, or do tents.
Another option is to try
Mr. Brooten’s Guiness Book of World Records fantasy
and build a 20 foot
diameter igloo. It has not been successfully done in the
past due to
design flaws and time constraints. So this could be the weekend
to try
it and just tent camp. We could also go to Baker, where the 60 inch
rule doesn’t apply, but there is not much snow there either. This
outing
would be difficult to postpone because of school schedules.
Sooo... the boys
would need to bring good tents - three or four
season. Listen to Scoutline
for updated information. Any boy who
has not been on a winter outing with
this troop needs to have a pack
inspection at Mr. Brooten’s house on Thursday,
between 6:00pm and 9:00
pm. Earlier is better. See the list on email or in
the Skull and
Crossbones for necessary items.
Software: “Troop Master”: This program
can do advancement reports and charter
information. It takes one hour
to do one advancent form and five munites with
this program. It is
recommended by the Council because reports can be
submitted on line.
It costs $59.00 and can import data from Excell. Who
would keep it
up? Several people are doing miscellaneous computer chores for
the
troop that this program would handle. We would need to coordinate all the
jobs. It probably wouldn’t require more time.
Motion:
by Brian Easton, to pay $60.00 to purchase the “Troop Master”
program.
Seconded by Don Morris. Motion passed.
Boy Leaders: We are
trying to get better at developing leadership skills in
the boys. We
need a Patrol Parent for one patrol, the Buchaneer’s. Don
Morris
volunteered. Other patrols have a parent already. Mr. Wollen put
together a two page sheet for camping as a ptrol. The Parent acts as
an adult
advisor to the Patrol Leader. Mr. Hanzeli is patrol Parent
Coordinator. Mr.
Wright is monitoring the TLC once a month and helping
them plan good
meetings. We need parents to help with the main course
of the meeting. If
each parent does one meeting a year, we will have
good meetings. The paper is
in the front of the book to sign up.
Coordinate with the SPL and encourage
him to follow through. The idea
is to prime the pump rather than do it for
him.
Polar Bear Swim:
There were 16 or 17 swimmers that took the plunge!
Scout Sunday: This
is one Sunday per year when we, as a troop, have an
opportunity to thank the
St. James for letting us use their church. We must
all go to their
10:30 am service in full uniform. Please arrive by 10:15 and
meet at
the back of the church. There is a reception following downstairs.
Boys usually help with the cleanup. Scout Sundy is a nation wide
event. This
year the date is 4 February 2001.
Outings: Boys
are signed up up to coordinate outings until May. The dates on
the
calendar are assigned arbitrarly.
Webelos: There are lots of Webelos
coming to check out our troop. Say,
“Hi!” Answer
questions. Parents need their questions answered as well, when
they
come to visit.
There were no reports for Chartered Organization or Mom & Me,
OUTING REPORTS
No reports.
OTHER BUSINESS:
Thank you: Gabe Hanzeli wishes to thank the dads
who have volunteered to help
out in past weeks.
