April 2002 Committee Minutes

BSA TROOP 474
Parent's Committee Meeting
9 April 2002

The meeting was called to order at 7:38 P.M. by cochair Shawn
Sather.  Introductions were made.

ATTENDANCE:  Art  Anderson, Kent Brooten, Dave Crowell, Debbie Dubay,
Brian Easton, Katie Hanzeli, Rob & Lori Healy, Dave Heutchy, Pete Logar,
Susan  Maloney, Kathy Morey, Don Morris, Randy Miller, Arthur Pinkers,
Carl Prichard, Shawn Sather, Dan Sturgis, Dave Watson, Doug Wollen, and
Ken Wright.

MINUTES:  The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted with one
correction.

TREASURER'S REPORT:   Reported by Lori Healy.  The beginning balance as
of 12 March 2002 was $21,346.65.  Income was $6,809.72 and Expenses were
$10,987.23.  The ending balance as of 3 April 2002 was $17,169.14.
$12,345.72 of the ending balance is Philmont money.  Philmont has been
paid $4,380.00.  We still have $120.00 leftover from Mountaineers that
will be reimbursed to someone who didn't go.  Who are you?
A deposit for fifty boys to attend Camp Parsons has been paid to Council.
We don't have fifty boys signed up yet.  The deposit to go is $80.00.
Mr. Brooten's reimbursement has been applied to his and Seth's
Philmont trip.
The bank account signatories have not yet been changed.
Motion:  by Art Pinkers:  The new signers on the checking account will be
Kent Brooten, Greg Cannon, Shawn Sather and Lori Healy.  Carol Malama,
Gary Bruno and Dave Heutchy are to be removed.  Seconded by Carl
Pritchard.  Motion passed.
Mrs. Healy thinks that all is in order with the books and believes that
there is no real reason to do an audit except that it's good practice.
Volunteers to conduct an audit are Arthur Pinkers and Art Anderson.  A
third person is needed.  The tentative date for the audit is 23 April
2002 during the troop meeting.
The bank statement will be sent directly to Mr. Sather, then he and Mrs.
Healy will balance it together each month.

SCOUTMASTER'S REPORT:
Mr.  Brooten thanks all the people who helped to pour 38 yards of
concrete at his house on Saturday!
The outings have been confused lately.  The goals is that the boys plan
as many as possible.  Mr. Brooten would like one backpacking outing plus
one other outing per month.  See the list for Upcoming Outings.
Ape Caves:  Do we have enough adults to stay until Monday?  The kids have
Spring Break, but the adults do not.  Usually a service project for the
state park accompanies this outing.  The Ape Caves have the longest lava
tube in the continental U.S.
Leave No Trace:  Mr. Brooten is working on this a lot, but not a lot of
boys are signed up.  It is a very fun and educational outing and a
formal certificate is given for completion.  To be eligible, boys should
have gone on last year's Tyke Hike.
Climbing:  Mr. Brooten send out an email to all Scouts he thought would
be interested in this outing.  There is a flyer downstairs.  Scouts and
others can just go on the preliminary climb, too.
Camporee:  All Scouts should go.  It is being held at the King County
Fairgrounds in Enumclaw.
New Scouts & Parents' Meeting:  There will be an equipment demonstration
at the next troop meeting.  It is spring break and people may be gone.
Can we make a video of the presentation to replace the old one which has
gone missing?  He will also try and put the presentation on CD ROM.  Mr.
Brooten may postpone.
Mr. Brooten will give Mrs. Healy the Mountaineers list and permission
slips to help in balancing the books.  It's also on the website by date.
Welcome:  We still need a volunteer.  Parents would like a session on
food for backpacking.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Advancement:  Reported by Ken Wright.  Mr. Wright is requesting help
from a volunteer to do computer entry.  He is busy processing merit
badges every week.  Art Anderson is interested and Mr. Wright will
discuss it with him.
Summer Camp:  Reported by Don Morris.  It is time to get camp money
turned in.  $80.00 is due now.  The council has been paid for fifty boys.
Uniforms:  Reported by Katie Hanzeli.  Randy Miller has volunteered to
take over this job.  Thank you!
Secretary:  Reported by Katie Hanzeli.  Debbie Dubay has volunteered to
take over this job.  Thank you!
Woodcutting:  A date for cutting is scheduled for 27 April.  We have
lots of wood.  There is wood in Kent and Maple Valley.  Meet at Mr.
Brooten's at 8:30 A.M.  Please come and bring your equipment.
Since this is the same weekend as Mom & Me, the woodcutting date was
changed to 4 May.
Friends of Scouting:  Reported by Shawn Sather.  We've received one more
check, but are still $1100.00 short of our goal.
Scouting for Food:  Reported by Carl Pritchard.  A good job was done by
all.  We did all of our area plus one half of the Cub Scout area.  1389
items were collected.
Mom & Me:  We need 30 kids to go to staff.  There are only 10 signed up.
The boys will get service hours for participating.  We need to sell
this activity at the log.
Website:  Reported by Doug Wollen.  Mr. Wollen will up the site with new
people.
TLC:  Reported by Ken Wright.  Meetings are planned three months in
advance.  Elections for new leaders are being held tonight.  The bar is
high!  Mr.  Wright wants to keep the keep good momentum going.
Signup Book:  Reported by Peter Logar.  Forms are needed.
Patrol Parents:  Reported by Katie Hanzeli for Gabe Hanzeli.  Boys need
to work on getting their outings planned.

OTHER EVENTS
Council Recognition Dinner:  The dinner itself was nothing to write home
about.  However, the evening itself was good.  The presentations were
well done.

There were no reports for Transportation, Firewood Sales, Youth
Protection, Chartered Organization, Gear Supply, Scoutline, Round Table,
Scheduling, Troop Guide or Outings.

NEW BUSINESS
Lost & Found:  Debbie Dubay will put out items and recycle them to
"available" bins if lost items are not claimed after the Court of Honor.

experienced parent should coordinate.

and your own plates and utensils.
